Vicarstown parkrun | Victory in Vicarstown

Introduction

We’ve had a run of victories recently. We finished buying a house and moved in on Sept 21st 2023. Julie won a promotion whilst on maternity leave no less. I wish that after a major life win we could have some sort of timer that told us exactly when the next curveball was about to be thrown. I lie to myself and tell myself that I don’t need to know what the next round of hardship looks like. Alas that isn’t how life works. Reality returned and roared for our attention on Monday October 16th 2023. A dear family member had a recurrence of a serious illness and then just to make sure I got the message our beloved Glen River parkrun was destroyed by flooding on Wednesday October 18th 2023. It may seem a bit odd that with all this going on that I ran my second best parkrun time of the year but it seems when life is going into a trough I run my best. Take your victories where you can find them and at Vicarstown parkrun you will find them.

Journey around Parkrun Ireland

This was our 34th seperate parkrun in Ireland.

Course

The course is a simple out and back. I remember at the Kenmare 10 km in 2018 the Race Director jested that the course is sign posted and marshalled at every turn if you get lost you need your head examined. The same applies at Vicarstown parkrun.

Live A Little

You’ll have Water flowing next to you for the entire 5km parkrun. Make sure you listen to the melody of running water. I joked with Julie that “an ex girlfriend once told me that running next to water was good for my mental health….I married that girl.” I was very impressed by a young man of no more than five years old cycling on his bike next to his Dad throughout the entire 5k. I’m hoping Edward can do this with me someday. The young lad moved at a fast pace keeping with his Dad. They finished ahead of me and I placed sixth. It reminded me that despite the adversity that will always come something small to look forward too can help push you threw the moments of pain

Volunteers

According to the RD there was only one rule don’t take the finish token home and if we didn’t know what to do with the finish tokens then come over to him and he would sort us out. I could feel the character of Vicarstown parkrun and if you want to be a part of it email the parkrun vicarstown@parkrun.com
